RIP Sir Alan Rickman

ALAN RICKMAN (1946 – Always)

Alan Rickman, also known as Professor Snape – the strongest antagonist and the bravest man in Harry Potter, died at the age of 69 on January 14, 2016 after a prolonged battle with cancer, leaving behind a huge void in the hearts of millions of fans.

Snape will live forever in our hearts. I don’t know if it’s the fact that he had the same hairstyle and same set of clothes in the entire movie series, but Alan Rickman really got into the skin of Professor Snape with sheer brilliance. I swear to God, you cannot find ONE thing wrong with the way he carried off Snape.

I can’t bear the thought of a world without Alan Rickman. It still hasn’t sunk in yet. Not only Snape, this fine actor played a lot of memorable roles in his life. Be it Hans Gruber in Die Hard, or Colonel Brandon in Sense and Sensibility, this man’s voice keeps you hooked!
Cinema is definitely not going to be the same without you, Sir.

Snape is popularly known for his sassy one-liners. He did not loathe just Harry, but pretty much anyone who wasn’t in Slytherin. As a thorough Harry Potter fan, I share with you the most iconic of Professor Snape dialogues which at some point of time might have left you with utmost hatred, awe or pure lament for the man. (There are a few here, he didn’t get a chance to say, but let’s face it, we would love them in Alan Rickman’s voice!)

Wands up, ladies and gentlemen.

  1. Professor Severus Snape: What would three young Gryffindors such as yourselves be doing inside… on a day like this?
    Hermione: Uh… well… we… we were just…
Professor Severus Snape: You ought to be careful. People will think you’re…
    [sees Harry staring at him]
Professor Severus Snape: “Up to something.”
(Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone)
  1. “You are here to learn the subtle science and exact art of potion-making. As there is little foolish wand-waving here, many of you will hardly believe this is magic. I don’t expect you will really understand the beauty of the softly simmering cauldron with its shimmering fumes, the delicate power of liquids that creep through human veins, bewitching the mind, ensnaring the senses. . . I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, even stopper death — if you aren’t as big a bunch of dunderheads as I usually have to teach.”

  1. “Weasley’s wand causes devastation with the simplest spells. We’ll be sending Potter to the hospital wing in a matchbox.”
(Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets)-413842_w1020h450c1cx341cy198
  1. “That is the second time you have spoken out of turn, Miss Granger. Tell me, are you incapable of restraining yourself, or do you take pride in being an insufferable know-it-all?”
(Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban)
  1. “Turn to page 394.”
(Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban)
  1. Dolores Umbridge: [during an inspection] You applied first for the Defense Against the Dark Arts post, is that correct?
    Severus SnapeYes.
Dolores Umbridge: But you were unsuccessful?
Severus Snape: [with annoyance in voiceOb-viou-sly.
(Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix)
  1. “You dare use my own spells against me, Potter? Yes. I am the Half-Blood Prince.”
(Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince)-408753_w650
  1. “Detention, Saturday night, my office,” said Snape. “I do not take cheek from anyone, Potter . . . not even ‘the Chosen One.’
(Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince)
  1. “I have spied for you and lied for you, put myself in mortal danger for you. Everything was supposed to be to keep Lily Potter’s son safe. Now you tell me you have been raising him like a pig for slaughter —”
(Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows)
  1. Dumbledore:. After all this time?
    Snape: Always.

  1. “I have no idea. Potter, when I want nonsense shouted at me I shall give you a Babbling Beverage. And Crabbe, loosen your hold a little, if Longbottom suffocates it will mean a lot of tedious paperwork, and I am afraid I shall have to mention it on your reference if ever you apply for a job.”
(Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix)
  1. “What would your head have been doing in Hogsmeade, Potter?” said Snape softly. “Your head is not allowed in Hogsmeade. No part of your body has permission to be in Hogsmeade.”
(Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban)
  1. “Fools who wear their hearts proudly on their sleeves, who cannot control their emotions, who wallow in sad memories and allow themselves to be provoked this easily — weak people, in other words — they stand no chance against his powers! He will penetrate your mind with absurd ease, Potter!”

  1. How extraordinarily like your father you are, Potter,” Snape said suddenly, his eyes glinting. “He too was exceedingly arrogant. A small amount of talent on the Quidditch field made him think he was a cut above the rest of us too. Strutting around the place with his friends and admirers … The resemblance between you is uncanny.”
(Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban)
  1. “Look.. at.. me. You have your mother’s eyes.”
(Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows)

He may be gone now, but he won’t be forgotten. Not only the people from Harry Potter fandom, but people all over the world, share this feeling of sadness and bereavement, and we hope he rests in peace.

RIP Alan Rickman. You were a great Professor Snape, and an even greater person. You’ll be loved. You’ll be missed.
